Eagle Mount has been helping thousands of people with disabilities and their families enjoy Montana’s inspiring outdoors for the last 40 years.
The MISSION of Eagle Mount Bozeman is a commitment to provide quality adaptive recreation and sport opportunities for people with disabilities and young people with cancer, and to provide support for families of participants, so that ‘they shall mount up with wings as eagles.’
Why is it important?
For nearly 40 years, with the help and support of a generous community, Eagle Mount has focused on celebrating abilities while supporting disabilities. They serve individuals with disabilities of all ages, as well as people with cancer. Whether horseback riding, skiing, swimming, gardening, cycling, climbing, or enjoying a variety of other activities, their participants and their families expand their horizons in a multitude of ways through each of Montana’s four seasons. Recreation means a lot more than play-time; it is a chance for literal “re-creation” — restoring yourself by discovering new strength, confidence, freedom, and joy.
Since inception in 1982, Eagle Mount has grown to occupy a 19-acre campus in Bozeman, as well as offer a broad spectrum of activities, camps, and events for its participants. Following its founders’ wishes, Eagle Mount never turns anyone away if they cannot pay, and is funded entirely through private dollars. These days, they serve about 2,000 participants a year, with the help of an equal number of volunteers. Set under the beauty of Montana’s legendary big sky, Eagle Mount focuses on people’s abilities, while gently supporting their disabilities.
How do they do it?
Eagle Mount’s wide array of engaging programs encourage participants to get moving, forge lasting friendships, make new memories, and discover their capabilities. Eagle Mount understands the unique delights and challenges many families face when a family member has special needs. In turn, their Family Engagement Program mission is to improve the lives of caregivers, parents, and siblings by providing respite programs, support, and family-centered recreational opportunities.
A slew of Summer Recreation is available to participants including cycling, horticulture and climbing while their Adventure Days offer people fun outdoor activities like camping, fishing, rafting, hiking and music. When it’s cold, Winter Recreation is in full bloom. Participants can take ski and snowboard lessons on the breathtaking slopes of Big Sky or Bridger Bowl, experience ice skating, snowshoeing and cross country skiing. People will develop confidence, coordination, patience, self-esteem, and practical life skills in Eagle Mount’s adaptive Horsemanship Program.
Participants can swim or take swimming lessons all year round on campus in the warm saltwater pool and enjoy the uniquely supportive, relaxing, and refreshing effects of water. Lastly, a wheelchair friendly gym is on campus to tone mind, body and soul for all participants wanting a good workout.
Montana’s inspiring wilderness is the focus for Eagle Mounts Camps programs. They offer opportunities for hiking, fishing, zip-lining, kayaking, flying, crafting, singing, skiing, s’mores, and more. They provide camps for Eagle Mount participants and their families, young people with cancer, veterans, and mono-skiers. These experiences result in beautiful friendships and unforgettable memories.
Eagle Mount Bozeman partners with over 50 local businesses and corporate sponsors to help support their mission in addition to thousands of volunteers, donors and participants.
