Dignify the lives of people living in vulnerability in Los Cabos, through the support of community programs that have a focus on health, nutrition, education and family well-being, to improve their quality of life.
Why is it important?
The story of the Solmar Foundation begins with the philanthropic vision of founder Don Luis Bulnes. When Bulnes and his Solmar Group came to Los Cabos as a developer, the town was little more than a small fishing village with a landing strip and a fish cannery. His visionary approach created water, electricity, and connectivity infrastructures that transformed Los Cabos into the bustling and thriving tourist destination it is today. Aligned with the Solmar Group’s vision of a better Los Cabos, the non-profit Solmar Foundation was created to lend a helping hand to community members who needed it most.
According to statistics from the Government of Mexico, Los Cabos, and Baja California Sur had 28.5% of its population living in poverty and 43% living in vulnerable conditions in 2020, with limited access to education, health services, and employment opportunities. Less than half of the area’s residents have completed high school. Among the many challenges facing the native population of the Los Cabos area include recent natural disasters, including devastating hurricanes. These disasters have a more significant impact in Baja California Sur because much of the housing is not hurricane-proof.
Other needs stem from the fact that many parents must travel some distance to reach their workplaces and don’t return until later in the day, but schools dismiss at 2 p.m. This means their children are unsupervised unless their parents can pay for extra-curricular activities. The needs are very high, and the Solmar Foundation supports organizations that provide educational and other programs for these children.
