Protect and preserve rocky shore intertidal life, nesting and migrating sea birds, and marine mammals that inhabit Devil’s Punch Bowl State Natural Area, Otter Rock Marine Gardens, Otter Rock Marine Reserve, and the National Islands Wildlife Refuge.
Why is it important?
Since 2020, Friends of Otter Rock Marine Reserve was born out of the need to bring together independent, volunteer stewardship of the Otter Rock Marine Reserve under one organization. They aim to strengthen stewardship and protect the Otter Rock Marine Reserve and its wildlife. Although marine ecosystems are resilient, the nearshore is susceptible to the stress of human activity that we can all work together to minimize. We must become good stewards of natural areas for future generations so that wildlife can thrive.
Marine reserves worldwide have shown to be a powerful way to protect coastal environments. Studies reveal that when fishing is restricted in these areas, fish populations grow in number and become more diverse and more prominent in size. Marine reserves also give scientists valuable space to observe and monitor how coastal ecosystems evolve in response to human activities and environmental changes. This makes them essential for conserving marine life and understanding the health of our oceans.
