How to Travel Kindly in Los Cabos

There are many ways to be a responsible traveler in Los Cabos, helping to protect this unique and extraordinary destination and keeping it pristine for future generations of locals and travelers alike. Here are some of the ways to do that:

  • Stay in one of the destination's sustainable retreats. There are many hotels and resorts in Los Cabos that are actively working to minimize their ecological footprint, while also embracing social responsibility.
  • Support the local farm-to-table movement. A growing list of Los Cabos restaurants proudly use ingredients grown or produced just a few miles away.
  • Visit a local organic farm and take a guided tour to learn more about the farming practices. (Don't miss sampling and purchasing some fresh produce.)
  • Support local artists by shopping at their galleries.
  • Engage in rural tourism, visiting communities like Miraflores, Santiago, Sol de Mayo, and more, which have embraced sustainable development principles, ecotourism, and the preservation of natural resources.

Amigos para la Conservación de Cabo Pulmo

Amigos para la Conservación de Cabo Pulmo (Friends for the Conservation of Cabo Pulmo) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and sustainable management of Cabo Pulmo National Park, one of the most successful marine protected areas in the world. The organization works closely with local communities to protect the biodiversity and marine ecosystems of the region, particularly its renowned coral reef. Through environmental education, scientific research, and community engagement, Amigos para la Conservación de Cabo Pulmo strives to ensure that the natural beauty and ecological importance of Cabo Pulmo are preserved for future generations while promoting sustainable livelihoods for local residents.
 

Corazon Flora Animal Welfare Department 

Corazon Flora's mission is to limit animal suffering and work to control overpopulation. The organization also protects threatened species and supports the local community. On a day-to-day basis, Corazon Flora engages in activities like helping rescue cats and dogs in distress, relocating endangered bee hives, and caring for wild animals that need medical care. CF also supports a network of independent rescuers who foster rescued cats and dogs, including critical medical care and spay and neuter services.

El Ganzo Community Center

El Ganzo Community Center is a nonprofit organization in San José del Cabo, Mexico, dedicated to fostering creativity, education, and community engagement. Through its wide range of programs, the center offers workshops in arts, music, sustainability, and entrepreneurship, providing residents with the tools and knowledge to pursue personal and professional growth. El Ganzo Community Center serves as a cultural exchange and empowerment hub, offering a welcoming space where individuals of all ages can come together to learn, collaborate, and support one another. Their mission is to inspire positive social change while strengthening the fabric of the local community.

Letty Coppel Foundation

The Letty Coppel Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for vulnerable individuals and communities in Mexico, focusing on social responsibility, health, and education. Through its various programs, the foundation offers essential support to women, children, seniors, and individuals with disabilities, helping to empower them with resources, training, and healthcare. Their initiatives range from environmental conservation and emergency aid to fostering personal development, always with a vision to promote sustainable, positive change within the communities they serve.

Solmar Foundation

The non-profit Solmar Foundation was established to provide assistance to community members in need. Government statistics for the Los Cabos and Baja California Sur region revealed that in 2020, about 28.5% of the population lived in poverty, while 43% lived in vulnerable conditions. 

Limited education, health care, and employment opportunities are challenges for those in need. Solmar Foundation works to address these and other critical issues by establishing key partnerships with local agencies that can provide important services. Partners range from daycare centers to medical programs and public agencies. Solmar Foundation directs resources where they are most needed.

 

Mindful Adventures 

There's a variety of memorable ways to experience Los Cabos mindfully. For many visitors, that begins with taking in some of the region's stunning beaches. Among the most memorable beaches are Lovers Beach, Santa Maria Beach, and Chileno Bay Beach. Surfing, snorkeling, and paddleboarding offer still other ways to experience the natural beauty of Los Cabos mindfully. There are two Blue Flag beaches in Los Cabos – Chileno Bay and Santa Maria Beach – where sheltered coves offer calm waters ideal for snorkeling.

Another peaceful, eco-friendly way to explore the waters surrounding Los Cabos is by embarking on a stand-up paddleboarding excursion. Alternatively, kayaking. There are tour operators who lead excursions of the protected coves in areas like Chileno Bay, Santa Maria Bay, and Lovers Beach, where it's not unusual to see sea lions, dolphins, sea birds, and, on occasion even whales.

On land, don't miss hiking the Sierra de la Laguna mountain range. A popular pastime in Los Cabos, numerous hiking trails allow for taking in indigenous flora and fauna. AllTrails says there are 64 trails in the area. There are even trails that take intrepid hikers to the Fox Canyon waterfall. Visitors who want to explore more deeply can hire a guide to lead a hiking adventure.

 

Conscious Culture

For those in search of meaningful cultural experiences, there's no shortage of options in Los Cabos. Each November, the destination hosts the Los Cabos International Film Festival, bringing together Mexican filmmakers and their Canadian and American peers.

Separately, each Thursday evening from November through June, the San Jose del Cabo Art District hosts an Art Walk featuring artisans throughout the region. Music lovers, meanwhile, may want to take in the San Jose del Cabo Jazz Weekend Concert Series, which takes place in San José del Cabo and features two days of Latin jazz performances.

Los Cabos also offers a rich array of local museums, where visitors can learn more about the Indigenous Pericues Indians who have called the area home for centuries. The Natural History Museum of Cabo San Lucas is the biggest museum among the options. This facility showcases artifacts and collections of paleobotany, geology, and paleobiology. Yet another not-to-miss stop for those interested in history is the Mission San Jose del Cabo. Established in 1730, the structure was a Jesuit Mission. 

For another take on the region's history, explore the community of El Triunfo, which provides a look at the silver mining legacy of Baja California Sur.

 

 

Dine & Shop Kindly

There is certainly no shortage of compelling dining options in Los Cabos, many of which showcase the best of Mexican gastronomy, including offering unforgettable and eco-friendly farm-to-table menus.

 The legendary Acre, for instance, is located on a 25-acre oasis and has built a reputation for offering local ingredients presented in a variety of inventive ways. And don't miss the Michelin one-star Cocina de Autor. The restaurant is known for combining a stylish setting (including ocean views) and a menu put together by two-Michelin-starred chef Sidney Schutte featuring unexpected pairings of fresh local ingredients. At the Japanese restaurant Nicksan, the dining experience is ever-changing based on what's seasonally available to support conservation efforts.

Yet another way to shop kindly is to support local Mexican arts and crafts in Los Cabos. You can support local artists in many locations, including Plaza Artesanos, where more than 75 vendors can sell everything from jewelry to street art and handmade dresses. Meanwhile, foodies should head for the local farmers markets around Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. Markets like El Merkado feature foodie favorites like homemade honey, locally grown vegetables, and even local bakery treats.

Getting Around
Once you've arrived in Los Cabos, there are numerous ways to get around, including taxis and car rentals. If you'd like to engage in an even more eco-friendly transportation option, there are also local public buses, which are very reliable. They are also very affordable; the fare typically ranges from $2 to $3. The public bus system even runs from the airport in Los Cabos.

Getting There
Los Cabos is most commonly accessed via international flights through the Los Cabos International Airport (SJD). There are direct flights from many U.S. cities, as well as Canadian cities. The destination is served by numerous well-known airlines, including American Airlines, United, Spirit Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Delta, and Southwest, among many others.
