Challenging the effects of urban poverty by helping families achieve better lives for themselves and their children.
Henry Street's MISSION is to open doors of opportunity to enrich lives and enhance human progress for Lower East Side residents and New Yorkers, through social services, arts, and health care programs.
Why is it important?
Of the approximately 45 million Americans living at or below the poverty line, nearly three million live in the state of New York. Kids born into poverty are likely to remain in the cycle, and the longer this occurs, the more, increasingly difficult it becomes to break free. Without access to quality education, basic healthcare, and social services, the so-called promise of the American Dream grows steadily out of reach–often landing them on the street, or worse.
How do they do it?
As an agency of neighborhood-based social change, Henry Street offers a broad range of social programs, catering to health, employment, education, housing, recreation, the arts, and senior services. Such services address an individual’s entire life cycle, from childhood to old age. The 60,000+ New Yorkers whom this benefits each year leave the Settlement equipped with tools to help them succeed in life, providing fulfillment, friendship, support, empowerment, and a deep connection to the community that helped them get back on their feet.
