ABOUT
The Setting
Picture this – you are in western Belize riding in a Jeep with the top down. The road is dirt, and the air is clean and sweet. In just under an hour from the more developed San Ignacio area, you reach the Mountain Pine River Forest Reserve and the GAÏA Riverlodge, perched atop the magnificent FIve Sisters Waterfall. This stunning lodge is where your adventure will begin. It has everything a Kind Traveler would covet; it’s sustainable by design, it’s operated by hydropower sourced from the nearby Privasson River, and most of the resort’s fruits and vegetables are farmed on-site in the Mayan garden, and it is a proud Green Globe Award certified hotel. You can take a dip in the natural swimming holes, hike or borrow a bike and hit the resort’s trails to nearby Big Rock Falls to soak. Or, head out for limitless adventures, including cave canoe trips, zip-lining through the rainforest, or visiting ancient Mayan ruins at Caracol.
Sleep and Sanctuary
The 16 eco-friendly lodgings at GAÏA are distinct in design, featuring native Belizean hardwoods, mosquito nets, and handmade textiles giving off chic treehouse vibes. The styles range from guest rooms with impressive and soothing Five Sisters Waterfall views to thatched-roofed cabanas with garden or waterfall views (some with terraces). All room types give you a feeling of jungle intimacy and comfortably quiet solitude. You won’t find any TV’s or appliances (don’t worry, you won’t need air conditioning).
