This family-owned boutique hotel in Waikiki is making every effort to make sure the only footsteps guests leave are on the beach.

The Setting

Find your aloha spirit with an Oahu getaway that gives back. Located on Waikiki’s Upper West Side, discover The Equus, the only family-owned boutique hotel in Waikiki. Also known as the first green hotel in Waikiki as endorsed by the Green Hotels Association, the family spirit of Equus serves as a warm and welcoming home base just steps away from the two-mile coastline of this historical surf destination rich in Polynesian and Pacific cultures. What’s also impressive is The Equus’ mission to Malama the ‘Aina (care for the Earth) by helping local reforestation, repurposing furniture in-house with local craftsmen, and donating partially used bath products to local un-housed residents. Hmmm, Kind paradise in paradise?

Sleep and Sanctuary

The 67 newly re-designed Deluxe and Classic guest rooms give you “island home away from mainland home” feels with plenty of Aloha to go around. All the cozy rooms feature heavenly pillow-top beds and handcrafted Italian linens, while incorporating antique and wood furnishings that are refinished and refurbished in-house, supporting local woodworkers and maintenance jobs as well as reducing waste. Also, find local artists murals & photography in-room, and historic photos of the property lining the hallways.  Most rooms feature lanais for some outside relaxing and all rooms feature fridge/freezer combos, coffee makers with organic coffee and teas and biodegradable bath amenities by Earth Tempo.

Eat. Pray. Eat.

The social pulse of the hotel is also where you can refuel. The Paniolo Bar & Cafe is right in the middle of the lobby and begins with an impressive organic coffee menu and cafe vibe, then makes a smooth transition to a saloon at night. Get the day off to the right start with favorites like avocado toast, fresh island fruits, oatmeal and sandwiches. Things get popping in the late afternoon when unique libations and locally sustainable-sourced brews start flowing for guests, fellow tourists and locals alike lounging in poolside cabanas. Live music happens every Friday night.

For some more out of the way eats, you’re welcome to enjoy the Equus Hotel family business, Hawaii Polo Club on the North Shore of Oahu. The only beachfront polo field in the world, you can experience the pristine beauty of Mokuleia with a day in the country. Dress to impress at the complimentary Equus Hotel table in the exclusive Clubhouse Tent. Or just bring your swim gear, pop up your tailgate and grill next to the ocean. There is something for everyone on Sundays (in-season April-Labor Day) featuring food & art vendors and live music from 5pm- sunset.

The Art of De-stressing

Hey, you’re in Hawaii, you’re already de-stressed! But, if you’ll indulge us for a moment here, apart from the natural calm that washes over you as you step off the plane, you’ll be pleased to find the world famous blue waters of Waikiki just steps away. Nearby Ala Moana Beach Park offers something for everyone, rent a Biki Bike and cruise around, or take a paddle board yoga class (no paddle experience necessary). Finish off the day at the best place to watch a Waikiki sunset.

Start your day (or end it) with some of Oahu’s famous hikes. Pick from a number such as; Diamond Head State Monument, Manoa Falls or Pillbox Hike, all just a short drive away. For a longer adventure, head to the North Shore and see breathtaking Waimea Falls or have a relaxing beachfront horseback ride (guests of Equus receive a discount).
