The MISSION of The Clean Wave is simple yet ambitious, to clean all 600 beaches in Costa Rica every week.

Why is it important?

The Clean Wave focuses on energizing and enabling their local communities to be empowered to make meaningful impacts and zero waste commitments. A sample of motivating factors for The Clean Wave’s efforts is that 100 percent of baby sea turtles will have plastic in their stomachs; this statistic is more alarming as Costa Rica is home to Leatherback Turtles. Eighty-eight percent of the sea’s surface is polluted by plastic waste, meaning one in three fish caught for human consumption contains some form of plastic. Lastly, the world produces 381 million tons of plastic yearly, with only nine percent of that being recycled.

How do they do it?

Driven by action, The Clean Wave will achieve its ambitious goal with a network of sponsors, non-governmental and community organizations, and with the help of 200 organizers who will run 2-3 community beach clean-ups per week. Through their beach clean-up events and participation in and development of zero waste community projects, The Clean Wave’s actions will have a real tangible impact. The Clean Wave’s eight initiatives include Underwater Restoration, Mangrove Restoration, Beach Restoration, Forest Restoration, City Restoration, Community Revitalization, Education & Zero Waste principles.
