Belize’s only multi-species avian rehabilitation center helps rescued birds to spread their wings and fly again.
The MISSION of Belize Bird Rescue (BBR) is to provide rescue, medical care and rehabilitation services free of cost to injured or endangered avians in Belize.
Why is it important?
Belize Bird Rescue is Belize’s only multi-species avian rescue center working with all species of resident and migratory birds, with a focus on wild parrots rescued from the illegal pet trade. They operate throughout the year, providing rescue, medical care and rehabilitation services free of cost. Release is the ultimate goal for all bird species in their care, and those unable to be released are given long-term sanctuary in a wild and natural environment. Your Kindness gives these birds a second chance.
How do they do it?
Belize Bird Rescue has been working in Belize since 2004 to address the illegal local trade in wild-caught parrots. They have liberated over 1000 wild parrots from captivity, and in partnership with the Belize Forest Department have implemented a licensing program to tag and monitor non-releasable, well-cared-for parrots already in captivity, whilst bringing an end to the captive wild trade. They provide free rescue services for all species of imperiled wild birds and in conjunction with partners at Animal Medical Centre in Belize City, they provide surgical care and in-house medical care for sick and injured birds. In conjunction, BBR attends educational outreach events and gives avian care and welfare advice.
They are based three miles outside the nation’s capital city of Belmopan, in the Cayo district of Belize, Central America. Their work takes them all over the country for rescues, releases and outreach programs. Belize Bird Sanctuary also maintains seven soft-release enclosures in strategic areas of the country, primarily for their parrot programs.
