Back On My Feet is helping to transform Baltimore lives one mile at a time.
The MISSION of Back On My Feet (BoMF) is to combat homelessness through the power of running, community support and essential employment and housing resources.
Why is it important?
By revolutionizing the way our society approaches homelessness, Back On My Feet’s unique running-based model demonstrates that if you first restore confidence, strength and self esteem, individuals are better equipped to tackle the road ahead and moves towards jobs, homes and new lives.
How do they do it?
Back on My Feet members are individuals currently experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless. BoMF looks beyond backgrounds and focuses on shared human experiences—the innate desire to feel recognized and supported, the need for goals and a way to accomplish them. No matter a person’s circumstance, Back on My Feet shows them that something as seemingly simple as running can strengthen individuals, build communities and transform lives.
BoMF members are recruited at homeless and residential facilities off referral and commit to run three days a week in the early morning. After 30 days in the program, members with a 90 percent attendance rate earn the opportunity to advance to the second phase called Next Steps, which provides educational support, job training, employment partnership referrals and housing resources. It should be said that over 80 percent of individuals that start the program move on to Next Steps.
In Next Steps, members work with BoMF program staff to develop a personal road map to independence. Each member attends financial literacy classes and job skills training provided through partnerships with the charity’s corporate partners. Members can earn financial assistance to remove barriers to employment and housing such as work supplies, transportation and security deposits. Members who achieve employment and housing become Alumni Members. Within six months of becoming a Back on My Feet Alumnus, 90 percent of members maintain their employment, 60 percent receive a wage increase and 20 percent achieve a promotion.
