To conserve and restore habitats, scenic areas and working lands while also providing public access to beautiful places.

Why is it important?

Visitors from around the world come to admire the unique beauty of Mendocino County’s beaches, bluffs, redwood forests, oak woodlands, and agricultural lands. The Mendocino Land Trust plays an important role in preserving this breathtaking natural beauty on California’s rugged North Coast for future generations. Through conservation initiatives, public trail access, and habitat restoration, the organization safeguards pristine forests, coastal bluffs, and vibrant waterways that support diverse wildlife. By protecting these fragile ecosystems, the Mendocino Land Trust fosters a deeper connection between people and nature, encouraging responsible stewardship and outdoor recreation. Whether you're wandering along a scenic coastal trail or spotting migrating whales from a protected overlook, the impact of their work is undeniable—offering a chance to explore, appreciate, and give back to the land.

How do they do it?

Through a dedicated blend of conservation, restoration, and public engagement, the Mendocino Land Trust works tirelessly to protect the region’s most cherished landscapes while ensuring people can connect with nature responsibly. Their trail and coastal access projects like the opening of the Mendocino Bay Viewpoint in 1996, give hikers and nature lovers the chance to explore protected lands without harming fragile ecosystems. As of 2022, Mendocino Land Trust has opened 14 public access easements and leads the state in operating public coastal access ways. By restoring habitats for native plants and threatened wildlife—such as salmon, steelhead, and native pollinators—their conservation efforts breathe life back into rivers, forests, and meadows. Working lands, including family-owned forests and ranches, are safeguarded through conservation easements that support sustainable agriculture and forestry, ensuring these essential lands remain productive while protecting biodiversity. In the face of climate change, the Land Trust leads reforestation and wetland restoration projects that sequester carbon, combat erosion, and strengthen ecosystems against extreme weather. Even such projects as installing EV charging stations throughout the county to ensure emissions are at a minimum are at the forefront of their efforts. Every initiative balances preservation with public access, proving that protecting nature and enjoying it can go hand in hand.
